Overview
ironSource offers monetization and distribution solutions for app developers, software developers, mobile carriers, and device manufacturers. With IronSource’s main product, InstallCore, users download the applications they want easily, quickly and safely.
InstallCore is the leading application installation platform for publishers in the world. About 30 percent of all desktop software downloads in the world are powered by InstallCore, along with 5-10 percent of mobile app downloads.
Role
As InstallCore's head designer, I am in charge of the UX / UI of the installation process for many companies around the world, I design in-house products, apps, extensions, landing pages and more.
I work closely with the development team (I learned html and css), account managers, project managers and sales department.
I started my role at ironSource as part of the Professional Services team to lead the design of the installation platform. During my time here I have grown and progressed, proven myself professionally, and evolved to design for the whole InstallCore department.
TheAppShop Design
This is an example of one of the applications I have designed during my time at ironSource.
TheAppShop is an app store that allows you to search and download many different apps for the desktop platform very easily. The apps are divided into different categories and subcategories so you can find the apps you would like very quickly. It includes information about each app, including the author's description, images and rating before you decide to download the app. You can also uninstall easily any app you downloaded.
Research Method
I started with experiencing the existing app stores like Google app store, Microsoft store, and similar stores like iTunes and the iPhone app store.
I summarized the repeating and changing components (categories, download buttons, reviews, rating-stars, information presented, etc.) and started to design the wireframes with the components the R&D and I decided will be in the first version of TheAppShop app.
For the first version we uploaded this UX design:
User Testing
In this UX design the users select which apps they want to download and click on one main button to download all the apps they selected.
After testing it on our users and reviewed the data, we didn’t get the amount of app downloads we hoped for. The users are opening TheAppShop but not downloading many apps.
I understood there was a problem with the UX and decided to approach the selection and download in a different way.
I designed another wireframe, this time instead of checkboxes and one main download button I designed a download button for each app.
The data from our users showed this UX design performed much better.
We kept on A/B testing the UX design and I designed more option to test, changing the kind of menu, with subcategories or without, downloading each app separately or all together, placing the search bar in different locations and sizes, adding "starts" and removing them and changing the "box" layout. For example:
In this UX design you can see a different approach to the menu, the apps are all in one long drilldown without subcategories, each app is downloaded separately, the "box" layout is wide with large images, there are no stars review and the logo is smaller. There is a top banner to promote an app.
Conclusions
After testing many UX designs the conclusion of our tests showed that the users downloaded the largest amount of apps when there was a feature they select the apps they want to download and they are all downloaded at once. It took us a while to understand what kind of "Box" layout will perform the best.
The A/B test showed that the users downloaded the largest amount of apps with the UX design showed below. We achieved the amount of downloads we set as our goal.
The selection drawer can be accessed any time during a session to show selected apps.
The user can choose to download a specific app or download all of his selected apps at once. He can also remove an app from the list if he would like to.
All the apps are organised in categories and subcategories so the user can find the app he would like to download as easy as possible.
Each app has a page with all the information about the app, the author's description, images and rating, so the user can read all the information he needs before deciding to download the app.
The user can easily uninstall any app he downloaded from TheAppShop.
